Metamorphosis Art Projects together with Naif Gallery, are proud to present Bahraini artist Rashid Al Khalifa, at Scope Miami 2021. Showcasing the selection of his work from the past ten years, the presentation explores Rashid’s experimentation with light and colour through complex three- dimensional structures, that gradually reveal themselves as the spectator’s viewpoint changes.

Metamorphosis Art Projects and Naif Gallery have carefully selected works from Rashid Al Khalifa’s Hybrid, Parametric and Spectrum series, including one of his Mobile Columns, on display in the Atrium of the Scope pavilion, as part of the ‘New Contemporary’ multidisciplinary program. It is from the series of Mobile Columns, that in 2018, Rashid began to develop structures formed of complex, grid-like patterns, characteristic to much of his later work. When viewed from certain distances and at certain angles, moiré patterns begin to appear, and our mind endeavours to comprehend these subtly shifting inventions, as the artists explores the limits of our perception. Rashid’s art is experiential and participatory, whereby his choice of materials and meticulous design, purposefully combines exuberant colours and gradations of shadow.

Rashid Al Khalifa’s steady artistic development over the past forty years, was largely influenced by the mystery and constantly shifting landscape of his native Bahrain. Furthermore, he found inspiration in the repetitive nature of Islamic architectural patterns, that presented him with an opportunity for precise observation of light and shadow, and the consideration of positive and negative space. Interestingly, despite the transformation of his style and use of material, the interplay of light and shadow and Rashid’s sensitivity towards form and colour, continues to characterize his work.

With deep insight and drive, Rashid Al Khalifa continues to draw inspiration from his origins but always goes one step further with his inventiveness and design of thought provoking and awe inspiring aluminium structures.
